{"id":1676,"date":"2025-03-23T22:24:16","date_gmt":"2025-03-23T22:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/movewithnicole.com.au\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-storing-a-cut-avocado.html"},"modified":"2025-03-23T22:24:16","modified_gmt":"2025-03-23T22:24:16","slug":"the-ultimate-guide-to-storing-a-cut-avocado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ozhelp.org.au\/blog\/health\/the-ultimate-guide-to-storing-a-cut-avocado.html","title":{"rendered":"The Ultimate Guide to Storing a Cut Avocado"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As much as we all may want to eat an entire avocado in one sitting, the recommended serving size is just 1\/4 of a medium avocado.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re following a Beachbody program, that\u2019s about one blue container\u2019s worth \u2014 not a whole heck of a lot, we know.<\/p>\n<p>To add insult, avocados aren\u2019t cheap and don\u2019t particularly keep all that well once they\u2019ve been cut.<\/p>\n<p>Ask a handful of people what the best way to store a cut avocado so it doesn\u2019t turn brown and you\u2019ll most certainly get a handful of different answers.<\/p>\n<p>Brush it with oil! Rub it with lemon juice. Wrap it up nice and tight with plastic wrap (which is actually impossible to do, by the way, because plastic wrap doesn\u2019t really stick to anything\u2026 except itself).<\/p>\n<p>So what is really the best way to keep an avocado from turning into a brown, slimy mess?<\/p>\n<p>Well, rule number one is to keep as much of that beautiful green flesh covered to minimize air exposure.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s this that causes the avocado to turn brown, and ultimately spoil.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to preserve a cut avocado, a horizontal cut exposes the least amount of flesh.<\/p>\n<p>Just stand the avocado cut-side down in a small bowl and it should last for days in the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the horizontal cut isn\u2019t the best way to cut an avocado \u2014 a lengthwise cut is, particularly if you\u2019re wanting slices or cubes.<\/p>\n<p>But if you don\u2019t use the entire avocado, storing the leftovers becomes trickier (because more of the flesh of the avocado is exposed to air).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Avocado Test<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To find out the best way to store an avocado cut lengthwise, I purchased five perfectly ripe avocados \u2014 all of similar color and firmness \u2014 and put four of the most common preservation tactics to the test.<\/p>\n<p>I stored one alongside a cut onion, coated the cut side of another with cooking oil, brushed the flesh of a third avocado with lemon juice, and tightly wrapped (well, as tightly as humanly possible) a fourth with plastic wrap.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10170272286\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/The-Best-Way-to-Store-a-Cut-Avocado-inpost2.jpg\" alt=\"The Best Way to Store a Cut Avocado\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how they looked just before they went into the fridge. For science!<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there was also a control, which I left totally untouched.<\/p>\n<p>(My fourth-grade science teacher would be so proud.)<\/p>\n<p>With the exception of the plastic-wrapped avocado, I placed each cut avocado into an airtight food storage container (some with a fruit or veggie) and popped them all into the fridge.<\/p>\n<p>And there they sat for 48 hours, much to my husband\u2019s chagrin.<\/p>\n<p>After the two-day waiting period, we carefully evaluated each for appearance, taste, and texture.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Lemon<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10170272295 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/avocado_lemon.gif\" alt=\"The Best Way to Store a Cut Avocado\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Much to my surprise, the lemon\u2013brushed avocado fared the worst.<\/p>\n<p>It browned the most, felt slimy to the touch and, not surprisingly, took on a somewhat citrusy flavor.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. <\/strong><strong>Onion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10170272301 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/avocado_onion.gif\" alt=\"The Best Way to Store a Cut Avocado\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>I honestly didn\u2019t expect the onion to do much in the way of preserving the avocado \u2014 and looking at the control, I\u2019m not sure it did \u2014 but it certainly fared better than the lemon.<\/p>\n<p>Texture-wise, it stayed pretty firm, though the avocado did take on a noticeable oniony taste\u2026 not so bad if you\u2019re mixing it into guacamole.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. <\/strong><strong>Oil<\/strong><strong\/><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10170272298 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/avocado_oil.gif\" alt=\"The Best Way to Store a Cut Avocado\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The oil-coated avocado did pretty well \u2014 certainly better than the lemon juice and onion.<\/p>\n<p>The flesh remained moist but firm (not slimy).<\/p>\n<p>I used neutral-flavored canola oil and, while I didn\u2019t notice any change in flavor after the initial 48 hours, the avocado did taste a little off after 72 hours.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. <\/strong><strong>Plastic Wrap<\/strong><strong\/><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10170272304 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/avocado_saran.gif\" alt=\"The Best Way to Store a Cut Avocado\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The plastic-wrapped avocado didn\u2019t do too badly either, especially considering the pit made it impossible to get an air-tight seal.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, the flesh remained firm and moist and the flavor unchanged.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. <\/strong><strong>Control<\/strong><strong\/><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10170272292 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/avocado_control.gif\" alt=\"The Best Way to Store a Cut Avocado\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, the untouched avocado that sat by itself in a plastic food container could arguably have been the best of the bunch.<\/p>\n<p>The flesh seemed a touch drier than the oil-brushed avocado but not any more so than the plastic-wrapped one.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what they looked like side-by-side at the end of my little experiment:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10170272289\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/The-Best-Way-to-Store-a-Cut-Avocado-inpost3.jpg\" alt=\"The Best Way to Store a Cut Avocado\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3><strong>So, what is the best way to store a cut avocado?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If it\u2019s cut horizontally, simply place it cut-side down in a small bowl to seal off the exposed flesh, and stick it in the fridge.<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s sliced lengthwise, an airtight food storage container or small plastic bag might be the best and easiest option, though adding a light brush of neutral-flavored oil before snapping the lid shut might keep the flesh a touch more moist if you\u2019re planning to eat it within 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that and the oil may go rancid, which is what I suspect happened with mine.<\/p>\n<p>Plastic wrap will also do the trick but, if you\u2019re in and out of the fridge several times a day like we are in our house, it will come unwrapped at some point \u2014 which is strangely far more annoying than it sounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All photographs by Elle Penner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\t<script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As much as we all may want to eat an entire avocado in one sitting, the recommended serving size is just 1\/4 of a medium avocado.
