Read on to see if carob is the next best thing to fulfill your sweet cravings.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is a Carob Pod?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Carob\u00a0is a purplish-brown pod that grows on the Mediterranean\u00a0ceratonia siliqua, or carob, tree.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the leathery pods \u2014 which vaguely resemble overripe, shriveled bananas \u2014 you\u2019ll find a row of seeds surrounded by lots of sticky pulp.<\/p>\n<p>While carob is often deemed a fruit, it technically\u00a0belongs to the legume family.<\/p>\n<p>You might find roasted carob in syrups, molasses, drinks, candies, and baked goods.<\/p>\n<p>But if you want to add carob to food at home, you\u2019re not likely to find pods in the produce section at your local grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mascha Davis, MPH, RDN, founder of NomadistaNutrition.com and author of Eat Your Vitamins, the pods are usually ground into a powder (also called carob flour) since they aren\u2019t particularly easy to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>The seed of the carob pod is used as a\u00a0food thickener or stabilizer\u00a0and is not traditionally eaten on its own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can find it in the ingredients as locust bean gum,\u201d says\u00a0Melissa Majumdar, MS, RD, senior bariatric dietitian for Brigham and Women\u2019s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, carob\u2019s flavor has been likened to chocolate. \u201cHowever, it does have a sweet and nutty taste that distinguishes it from cocoa,\u201d Majumdar says.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Carob Used For?<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-148514\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/31121733\/carob-pods-600-uses.jpg\" alt=\"carob powder with pods | Carob Pods\" width=\"600\" height=\"443\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Carob pods have been used traditionally for a variety of health benefits, Majumdar says, but she explains that most of these claims are not validated by enough scientific research.<\/p>\n<p>For both flavor and nutritional benefits, you can add carob powder to recipes that call for cocoa powder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsider using it in yogurt, smoothies, oatmeal, or baked goods like muffins or granola,\u201d Majumdar says.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is the Nutrition of Carob?<\/h2>\n<p>Since carob is often compared to chocolate, let\u2019s break down how these two ingredients stack up against one another nutritionally.<\/p>\n<p>Davis explains that while carob has some notable pluses, it isn\u2019t necessarily healthier than chocolate.
