Born with a high metabolism. Able to eat whatever I want without gaining a pound. Not gonna lie, that would be amazing. But the truth is\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Growing up, I was always the big kid\u2026<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>I was never normal. I was never small. The pediatrician\u2019s office constantly told my parents, \u201cShe\u2019s obese. She\u2019s over the 100th percentile, she\u2019s not even on the chart!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was about four years old when my parents got divorced, and every picture of me since then was me holding food. I guess I was using it as a form of comfort, maybe a form of consistency when a lot of things in my life were inconsistent.<\/p>\n<p>Even going to the amusement park, I\u2019d immediately wonder: \u201cWhat snacks are we packing? Ice cream cones!\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re going to the circus? Cotton candy!\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re going to a birthday party? Pizza!\u201d This was my focus. My pediatrician finally looked my mom in the face and said, \u201cYou have to send her to weight-loss camp. She\u2019s going this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, at eight years old, I went to \u201cFat Camp.\u201d Can you imagine how that felt?<\/p>\n<p>But the truth is, I loved it. I made lots of friends. I was surrounded by people who didn\u2019t judge me. I lost 30 pounds. It was amazing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I came back to school\u2026 and gained it all back.<\/p>\n<p>This yo-yo-ing went on for years. Every summer, I\u2019d lose 30 pounds. Every school year, I\u2019d gain it all back \u2014 and more.<\/p>\n<p>Until I peaked\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-103150 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Meet-Ilana-redshirt.jpg\" alt=\"Ilana Muhlstein - teenager - 2B Mindset\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>At 215 pounds and a size 20 \u2014 and I was just 13.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, something was different that summer, something that gave me extra motivation. I was about to enter high school.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, I really wanted\u00a0not just to lose the weight, but to keep it off. So I asked myself, \u201cWhat did I do every summer that made it easy for me to lose weight? And what did I do differently during the school year that made me gain the weight back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At weight-loss camp, even on a restricted diet, there were certain foods that I could eat as much of as I wanted, and I\u2019d still lose weight.<\/p>\n<p>I also knew that I liked to eat a lot of food. I was a volume eater; I needed to feel full and satisfied. So I decided to try that on my own. I focused on the foods I could eat lots of, that made me feel satisfied, but that didn\u2019t cause me to gain weight.<\/p>\n<p>And by the end of my freshman year, I was shocked.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time \u2014 all on my own \u2014 I\u2019d not only managed to maintain my summer weight loss, I\u2019d actually dropped even more\u00a0pounds during the school year!<\/p>\n<p>I was so excited. I had discovered the formula that worked for me. It wasn\u2019t a new diet \u2014 it was a new mindset. And once I embraced it, I kept on losing weight, all through high school and when I went to college.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, I got down to 145 pounds. I was a size\u00a08 \u2014 the lowest size I\u2019d been since I was literally eight years old. I was a single digit!<\/p>\n<p>And the best part was that I was able to maintain that weight, without denying myself or telling myself\u00a0 \u201cno\u201d all the time.<\/p>\n<p>So I was able to stay a size\u00a08 through the rest of college, when I started my nutrition practice, met my husband, and got married.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-103152 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Meet-Ilana-wedding.jpg\" alt=\"Ilana Muhlstein - wedding photo - 2B Mindset\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>And then I got pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnancy for me was wild. For years, I was in such control of my body. Then suddenly it took a whole different shape.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of fighting, I let the pregnancy be what it wanted to be. Until the third trimester, it was like a switch flipped in my head. It was time to get back to my weight-loss mindset to lose the baby weight.<\/p>\n<p>So I refocused. I thought about the hundreds of clients I\u2019d helped and the principles that had worked not just for them, but for me as well.<\/p>\n<p>So after I delivered my beautiful daughter Olivia, I got right to work. I wasn\u2019t just ready, I was excited. I had a new purpose now \u2014 my daughter. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I always felt full and satisfied. I never deprived myself. And I never missed a meal.<\/p>\n<p>I just relied on a few simple principles that allowed me to lose weight while still living my life. Because that\u2019s everyone\u2019s ultimate goal, right? To be happy.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s still my goal as a registered dietitian nutritionist.
